I looked around on the buffalotech.com site but couldn't find a product listing for the model you listed (HS-DH 0.0TGL/R5); there are several similar models listed (HS-DH 1.0TGL/R5, -DH 2.0, etc).

Learning has never been so easy!

I needed to upgrade a clients Terastation Pro from four 1TB hard drive capacity to four 3TB hard drive capacity. After several days googling and reading forums of people trying to decide whether it was possible or not to perform the upgrade I placed a call to Buffalo technical support and asked them directly to which they responded “We don’t support it, it is best if you just buy a bigger unit” (For hundreds of dollars is the part they left out). That being said I just jumped right in had my client order four Western Digital Red 3 terabyte hard drives, and After saying a prayer asking the Lord to guide my thought process and my directions I accomplished the hard drive upgrade to the larger hard drives and the Terastation works just fine with no problems.
Here is the step by step how to and I hope this helps other with this brand of Nas device.

Buffalo Terastation Firmware

Step 1: Download The Latest Firmware

Go to the archived section at this address if you have an older Terastation Pro to obtain the latest firmware. And save it to your desktop. Create a new folder call it Buffalo Bios and extract the files using winzip or winrar to this folder. Make a copy of this folder just in case.

Step 2: Take screenshots of your existing Terastation setup so you have something to refer to later

Step 3: Backup Your Buffalo Files

Using a reliable temporary place to store your current Buffalo files move them over to a new folder called Buffalo Files. After the files are moved over delete the current Buffalo files just as a precaution and empty the Buffalo trash can folder.

Step 4: Break The Current Raid

Log into your Terastation web interface, go to system then go to storage, go down to raid array, click on the raid you want to break, click on delete Raid array. You will be asked to enter in the four digit code then to confirm that this is the action you want to perform. This will take a few minutes and you will need to log back into your web interface to proceed once the raid is broken.

Step 5: Removing The Hard Drives From The Drives Listing

One you log back into the web interface for your Terastation click on system, click on storage, and then you will see a list of hard drives. Here is what I did and what I suggest you follow.
I started by removing the fourth hard drive first. Click on the fourth hard drive, then click on remove you will be asked to enter the four digit number and asked to confirm that this is what you want to do. Do the same for the third and second hard drives. LEAVE THE FIRST HARD ALONE AT THIS POINT.

Step 6: Shutdown the Terastation Properly

All three lower hard drives have been removed from the hard drive listing, go to the maintenance tab of your Terastation and click on shut down. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, shutting down this way is the preferred way always so as not to ruin the controller board or any of the hardware inside.

Step 7: Replacing The Hard Drives

Open the front panel of your Terastation and slide out the old disks, unscrew the old drives from the three lower hard drive cages, screw cages to new disks slide new drives into your Terastation and power back on.
PLEASE NOTE:
Once your Terastation comes back online you will be greeted with warning beeps and sirens click on the function button to turn off these sounds. This is normal do not freakout. THIS IS NORMAL.

Step 8: Install The Latest Firmware

Here is why you did not replace the first hard drive from the Terastation. This hard drive has the boot up log information and will allow you to update the firmware version, and allow you to log back into the web interface to add your three new hard drives to the hard drives listing.
From the Buffalo Bios folder run the firmware updater follow the steps prompted to begin the firmware update. PLEASE DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE DEVICE UNTIL THE FIRMWARE UPDATE IS FINiSHED. The firmware updater will inform you a restart is needed and will do the restart on its own once back up it will let you know it has finished.

Step 9: Adding The New Hard Drives

Log into your Terastation go to system, click on storage then click on one of the new hard drives click on format, enter your four digit code and follow the prompts. Wait for the format to finish and click on the next new hard drive, format, four digit code, wait do the same for the third hard drive. Once all three hard drives are formatted you can now add the new hard drives to your Terastation. Click on the second hard drive, click on add enter your four digit code and wait until the add process has finished. Do the same for the third and fourth hard drives.
What this does is write the boot code onto all three of the hard drives even thought they do not have anything else on them, this makes the Terastation bootable from anyone of the hard drives even though no raid has been configured at this time.
Once all hard drive have been added to the hard drive listing and are ready then shut down your Terastation, remove the first hard drive swap in the fourth new hard drive and install it.
Power up your device once again you will get the warning sirens click on the function button and proceed. Click on system, click on storage, and format the new hard drives just added, once format is finished, click on add once finished you ahve successfully added the new hard drives.

Step 10: Building The New Raid

You are now past the hardest part of the hard drive upgrade. Now you can rebuild your raid selection I personally suggest a Raid 10 since you have the hard drive capacity but this is only a suggestion. Watch your raid build to insure insure that the build is successful.
Once the raid build is finished you can now import your backed up data. One thing to note, the Terastation hard drive consistency check will take up to four days to finished.
DOwnload tha install the new NAS Navigator software to your computer or managing server, understand that the NAS Navigator software will report a system error this is normal and will go away once the Terastation finishes the hard drive consistency check and you will be able to access your files and data from the NAS Navigator.

A word of caution:
By default, the Terastation will configure itself as Raid 0 which will not provide any resiliency if a drive fails

Hmm! I was considering this also. Once upon a time I had found a list of compatible hard drives.
I just expanded my VMware Servers and am now running short on backup space on my Terastation.
